Terminal Participles

Participial phrases are such useful modifiers that there is a
13
1
tendency to use them where they don't belong. Participial
13
1
phrases are always adjectives and must modify a noun or
13
1
pronoun. Adjectives cannot modify phrases or clauses.
13
1
When a participial phrase is used at the end of a sentence
13
1
(terminal participle), the phrase must modify either the noun
13
1
just preceding it or the subject of the sentence.

Note the use of the comma to show whether the participial
13
1
phrase is with the word it modifies (no comma) or is removed
13
1
from that word (comma).

Participial phrases cannot be used to modify concepts. In
13
1
the first two sentences below, the terminal participle was
13
1
intended to modify the concept of running rivers. However,
13
1
the participial phrase will actually modify either the noun
13
1
directly preceding it (as in the first example below) or the
13
1
subject (as in the second example). The corrected example
13
1
actually states the intended meaning.
